UK Pension & SIPP Advice for Expats

UK pensions can become more complicated when you live abroad. Your retirement plans may involve a workplace pension, personal pension, SIPP, investment portfolio, cash savings and assets held in several countries or currencies.

Elysium Wealth Advisors helps expatriates review pension arrangements as part of a wider retirement plan. The aim is to understand what you have, how the different parts fit together and which decisions require regulated personal advice.

UK pension advice for expats

People who have worked in the UK may retain pension benefits long after moving overseas. Rather than looking at each pension in isolation, we consider retirement timing, expected income needs, risk tolerance, liquidity, family circumstances and other assets.

Depending on your circumstances, planning may include reviewing existing pension investments, contribution history, beneficiary arrangements, retirement-income options and how pension assets fit alongside non-pension wealth.

SIPP advice for expats

A Self-Invested Personal Pension can provide investment flexibility, but flexibility alone does not make a SIPP suitable for every expatriate. Costs, investment choice, risk, access requirements and the regulations applying to your circumstances all need to be considered.

If you already hold a SIPP, we can include it in a broader review of your retirement strategy. If a pension change or transfer is being considered, suitability should be assessed carefully before action is taken.

Building a retirement-income plan

Retirement planning is about more than the pension itself. A sustainable plan may draw on pensions, investment portfolios, cash reserves and other assets at different stages. We consider how much income you expect to need, the time horizon involved and how much investment risk is appropriate.

For expats, currency can also matter because pension or investment assets may be denominated differently from day-to-day spending. The objective is not to predict exchange rates, but to recognise currency exposure as part of the overall plan.

Pensions within cross-border financial planning

Your country of residence, future plans and the location of other assets can affect the questions that need to be asked. Tax consequences and legal treatment can vary by jurisdiction, so specialist local tax or legal advice may be required alongside regulated financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep a UK pension after moving abroad?

The answer depends on the type of arrangement, provider rules and your circumstances. A review can help establish what options are available and whether any action is appropriate.

Should an expat transfer a UK pension?

There is no universal answer. Pension transfers can be complex and may involve significant risks, costs and loss of benefits. Any recommendation should be based on a detailed assessment and the applicable regulatory requirements.

Can you advise on SIPPs for people living overseas?

SIPPs can form part of the planning conversation for eligible clients. Whether advice can be provided and through which regulated route depends on residence, location and the specific advice required.
